NetDocuments Director of Product Management Nate Ruiz recently discussed the future of document management and ambient AI with host Jared Correia. Ruiz shared his background as a self-taught developer and bootcamp graduate who co-founded an AI contracting startup that was acquired by NetDocuments.

Correia introduced three practical AI entry points for attorneys: data collation, interactive natural language searching, and creative process brainstorming. He explained how large language models can save dozens of hours while keeping confidential data protected.

Ruiz detailed NetDocuments’ complete UX/UI re-architecture, automated “Doc Intelligence” pipeline, and the “Legal Context Graph”. He also discussed the concept of “ambient AI”, which works passively in the background without manual prompting.

The Legal Context Graph and Doc Intelligence use automated background indexing to classify unstructured files, extract entities, governing law, and key dates into structured context graphs. This dramatically cuts large language model token costs.

Ambient AI features run automatically behind the scenes, including instant document version comparison summaries and automated legal authority citation linking. Model Context Protocol (MCP) acts as a universal connector between large language models and core software systems.

Developers are leveraging tools like Claude Code for rapid prototyping. Ruiz also explained how MCP and vibe-coding with Claude are reshaping legal tech.

As the Director of Product Management at NetDocuments, Ruiz specializes in building Next Gen document management systems, ambient AI features, and legal context graphs. His background in software engineering and UX design has informed his approach to these technologies.

The discussion highlighted the potential of AI to streamline document management and improve workflow efficiency for lawyers. By leveraging large language models and ambient AI, legal professionals can save time and reduce costs.
